Dental Implants
Life expectancies are on the rise. Even though we try to preserve our teeth for an entire life time sometimes our teeth just do not make it. Dental implants are the most natural looking functional replacement a dentist can offer a patient. Dr Cynthia Skiba has been placing implants for over a decade and recommends them to all of her patients.
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth. It consists of a titanium rod surgically implanted in the jaw bone. The titanium is highly resilient and the bone in your body accepts the metal extraordinarily well. Once the bone has had time to grow and properly anchor the titanium rod in place a specially made crown is screwed into the rod.
Dr. Cynthia Skiba would define the ideal implant candidate as a non smoker with a strong healthy jaw, good oral hygiene and no signs of gum disease.

Advantages over Dentures or Bridges
The downside to traditional bridges and dentures is they are not anchored to bone, implants provide a much more resilient installation. An implants life expectancy can reach limits that surpass the life expectancy of the patient. Implants function, feel and act much like normal teeth. Implants do not have to rely on nearby teeth for support which increases the life expectancy of the surrounding teeth as well.
Post-Treatment Care
Everything has a life expectancy; the better you take care of your implant the longer it will last. Although Implants have a higher life expectancy than you do, that does not guarantee they will stay anchored in your bone. Proper oral hygiene is required to prevent the risk of gum disease which could cause your implant to become loose. Treating your Implants as if they were real teeth is highly important. Regular brushing, flossing and scheduled cleanings can make sure that your implants stay anchored for your entire lifetime.
